Big Als grills ‘em up Old School

Burgers, Shakes and Fries – oh my!

Big Als is truly a family diner, with Arturo Pascual and his wife Gloria rocking out the classics the same way the place has been doing it since 1973. The Heymaker and Grizzley are clear favourites in the burger department, with about 50 of each passing through the service window of this tiny establishment every day, and their Secret Fry Sauce disappears by the gallon.

But the surprises here are the Mexican specialties, made to order (seriously – ask for a chile rellano and watch it put together from scratch on the other side of the counter). Chalupas, Tamales and Tortas (try the beaded beefsteak milanesa) round out the ‘other’ side of Big Als dual-personality menu.

This is one of those old fashioned, out-of-the-way little places you almost forget is there, because of course cheeseburgers, fries and milkshakes – no matter how good they taste – are not how you eat every day. But then, every once in a while, you hear that little voice inside your head, the one that whispers, “Go … and … gettheonionrings. You know you want them”

… and then, you remember where the yummy fried stuff lives … ;-)
